academy.

Hood Construction is passionate about investing in people. developing the skills of the next generation is at the core of our long term objectives; through hood academy we can make that our priority.

welcome.

Hood Academy is our joinery apprenticeship course, currently open to applications from aspiring tradesmen in search of an exciting career.

The concept behind Hood Academy is simple - Not only is the apprentice gaining from the experience, as an employer, we benefit too.

It’s a mutually beneficial relationship that helps apprentices learn from fully qualified joiners; developing new skills, directly improving the business and helping both to grow.

Integral to Business.

As the driving force for learning and the training of our young apprentices, we make great efforts in prioritising Hood Academy. Hear it from the apprentices in the program - hard working individuals applying themselves and earning their place.

What our apprentices say.

“I’ve been a Hood Construction for about 8 months, whilst also attending Ayr College as a student. I’ve learned a lot here so far mostly working with the first fix squad. I’ve learned about continuous sheeting, floating floors, sheeting ceilings, standing and straightening partitions.

I’ve also learned a lot about other trades and how they all link up.

I’ve also learned a lot working with the kit squads; roof angles and roof bracing; learned that the panels and trusses get bought in and how they are stood and plumbed up; learned how gable ladders are linked on; learned about what roof line components go where.”

  • "i HAVE REALLY ENJOYED MY TIME AT HOOD CONSTRUCTION - i FEEL I AM LEARNING A LOT OF SKILLS; FROM DRESSING TIMBER KITS TO GETTING TAUGHT HOW TO BUILD ROOFS AND DOING LOOSE JOISTS. I'M ATTENDING MOTHERWELL COLLEGE AND I AM LEARNING A WHOLE LOT OF SKILLS, MAKING WINDOWS AND DOORS AND FITTING THEM - INCLUDING THE FRAMES AND FACINGS ETC. WE ALSO STARTED BUILDING GROUND AND UPPER FLOOR PARTITIONS. I ENJOY THE TECHNICAL DRAWINGS SIDE OF COLLEGE, AS I AM GETTING TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO DRAW WHAT YOU'RE BUILDING TO SCALE.

ANDREW RENNIE — APPRENTICE 2ND YEAR

“Since starting my apprenticeship at Hood Construction I have been mainly focusing on first fix joinery. Constructing a house tests you on the tools but also as an individual having to work in a team. Having to do this efficiently has helped me grow as an apprentice.

The past few months we have been building large 3 to 5 bedroom houses along with several large scale roofs.

For my first two years I have been attending Greenock College where you learn traditional joinery and construction drawing. The course includes hanging doors, building partitions, finishings, fitting windows, roof construction and more. The apprenticeship so far has been challenging but greatly rewarding with the skills and knowledge I have learned at Hood Construction.”
